Frequently Asked Questions
Welcome to Gabutique's F
Basics
What is Gabutique?
Gabutique is a retro-gaming–oriented server community dedicated to recreating the experience of playing classic games as if it were the 2000s*, while using modern technology to keep servers stable and accessible.

No registration is required to play, and a variety of servers are available. Feel free to browse the list, pick a server, and jump right in — you can even bring your friends along!

Be sure to familiarize yourself with the Server Rules. You may also be interested in reading the Server History, checking the FAQ, or joining our community on Discord or Facebook.

Why does this site looks like an imageboard?
This site intentionally uses a visual style inspired by early 2000s imageboards, especially the classic "[n]channel" aesthetic. I built the theme from scratch to capture that retro look and feel.

That said, the similarity is purely visual. This site does not include any imageboard-style features such as posting or communication, and it is not affiliated with or related to any imageboard platforms.
Community
Who are you?
You can call me Gabu. Founder, operator, and administrator of Gabutique. Running game servers and managing communities has been a long-time hobby of mine, and I've been hosting servers for years. Nice to meet you!

I've seen other people with the STAFF tag. Who are they?
Staff members are individuals I trust to help manage and improve the servers. They may be long-time community members, personal friends, or volunteers. Staff have administrative privileges, which can include moderating players, enforcing rules, and suggesting or implementing improvements to enhance the overall experience.

Can I be an admin?
Short answer, no. Long answer, maybe not. I only select people I personally trust.

Can I host my game community within Gabutique?
Due to past incidents where the objective of the community differs from between other admins and myself, I do not provide this opportunity to third-parties.

Can I host my game server in Gabutique's infraestructure? I can pay.
You're better off paying a real game hosting service.

Do you organize games in the community?
Group games on Discord are regularly organized in the community, but they are limited to known community members. Usually new people are invited, provided they can behave.
Support
How do you keep the servers running?
With money of course, and an unhealthy amount of time, effort, and dedication to keeping everything running smoothly behind the scenes.

Do you accept non-money donations?
No. Services, hardware, or other non-monetary contributions cannot be accepted. I appreciate the offer, though!

I cannot donate money. Is there any way I can support?
Absolutely! The best way to support the community is simply by playing on the servers and helping spread the word. Bringing in new players and staying active makes a real difference.
Servers
How to join the servers?
To join a server, simply open the game and connect using the IP address listed on the site. Depending on the game, you may also be able to find and join the server through the in-game server browser or matchmaking system.

Do you have plans to open a [X] server?
New servers are sometimes added based on community interest, but other factors are considered as well. In general, servers are more likely to be created for games I actively play—though exceptions can happen.

Can I join the server if I don't have the game on Steam?
For GoldSrc (Half-Life 1, sans Sven Co-op) servers, it's possible to join using a non-official client, though the official Steam version is strongly recommended. Please note that bans applied to non-Steam clients cannot be appealed.

For Source engine games, only official Steam clients are supported.

I saw a really cool feature in your servers, can I implement it in my own?
Some (but not all) of the custom features are available on my GitHub. You're free to use what's shared there, but I don't provide personalized support for implementation.
Access and Restriction
I got banned after flaming an admin? What gives?
Honestly, what did you expect to happen? That said, most bans aren't permanent. If you believe the ban was a mistake or want to appeal, you're welcome to reach out through the appropriate channels.

I never joined the server and I'm banned? What happened?
This is a telltale non-steamer ban that either your IP or other criteria triggered the ban system. If you truly believe this is a mistake contact me on Discord, or just wait it out.

A good way to avoid these kinds of bans is to just join with the official Steam game.

My IP range got banned but I'm innocent/My ISP blocks the connection, can I use a VPN to join?
VPN use is restricted due to the potential for abuse. At this time, only donators are allowed to connect using VPN services. I understand there are legitimate reasons for using a VPN, but this policy is in place to help keep the servers fair and well-moderated.

I got banned in Gabutique Half-Life, but I'm also banned in Gabutique Counter-Strike. Why?
Gabutique bans are applied to all servers.
Questions
When did Gabutique open?
Gabutique's official opening date is August 30, 2024 as seen by the welcome post in the Discord server. However, the servers and community had already been active for some time before that, originally operating under different names.

How did it all start?
The community traces back to the Sven Co-op 3.0 era, when a group of very young players met in a public home server. What began as casual play quickly grew into lasting friendships over time.

Fast forward to today's date, that shared history evolved into Gabutique, created with the goal of preserving that early online gaming atmosphere. Today, it serves as a space for veteran players to revisit that era, and for new players to experience the feel of 2000s-era gaming.

What is/was Daijobu?
Daijobu (or "Dai") is a community group that, in early-2000s terms, could be described as a “clan.” Many of Gabutique's founders and long-time regulars have been part of it or remain active within it.

Can I join Daijobu?
No.
